Students Acting as Teachers in Class? Use of Quizizz Environment to Improve Their Motivation

Marta Rojo

ABSTRACT:

Many teachers note that their students tend to complain about the difficulty of tests, questions, or exercises suggested in exams. In some cases, students do not understand what the teachers are asking them because the wording of the question can be confusing. Therefore, we must try to change this situation, making our subjects and classes more interactive, with a higher protagonist role for students. Teachers must be concerned that the old ways of teaching can be changed, as students are different. Different strategies are emerging to connect them with the topics included in class and to encourage their involvement in the learning process. To do so, an experiment was conducted at the University of Burgos, Spain, where students became teachers for one day in a certain subject. Acting as a teacher, they have to prepare a brief test on a topic and, through the Quizizz environment, present it to their classmates as a competition between them. The results are quite successful, since students do very much like this new system, while their grades are improving. Therefore, we can conclude that this type of experiment, which promotes the belief that a person controls his/her own results and encourages a sense of competition, can increase students’ motivation.
