Exceptive Constructions in Qur’anic Arabic
Dr. Safiah Madkhali
ABSTRACT:
Exceptive constructions are crucial for expressing exclusion and limitation in language. Among the exceptive markers in the Arabic language is the particle ?illa:. The focus of the present work is ?illa: exceptive constructions within the context of Qur’anic Arabic, the Divine language of the book revealed to the Muslim nation. In its 657 occurrences in the Qur’an corpus, ?illa: exceptive constructions exhibit varying syntactic and semantic features. Therefore, the present work carries out an investigation of ?illa: exceptive constructions, exploring the semantic and structural aspects on the basis of parameters found in cross-linguistic literature on exceptive constructions. The study highlights the heterogeneity in the nature of the construction. It indicates the categories of ?illa: constructions in the Quran and provides a characterisation of its aspects. The study also reveals the different readings of the construction as well as the meaning and status of the exceptive marker. Drawing on recent linguistic research, the study aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the linguistic complexity of exceptive constructions in Qur’anic Arabic.
