The Pillars of Effective Online Asynchronous Course Design
Dixie Abernathy
ABSTRACT:
Online teaching and learning have evolved over the past two decades into a viable and respected means to higher education, with many undergraduate and graduate courses now offered in this format, both synchronously and asynchronously. With decisions involving the process, the use of self-regulated learning strategies, embedded opportunities for collaboration, use of simulations or projects, competency-tracking on progress, best teaching strategies, and more, the thought process behind the design of online courses is an important element to a successful experience for the learner. Utilizing a compilation of lessons learned from prior research and application in online, asynchronous programs, the presenter will share the key components in the design of effective online courses. Drawing on prior publications by this presenter, core elements of undergraduate and graduate online education will be explored, and participants will walk away with an improved understanding of this important and growing instructional modality.
