Fostering Student Success & Belonging at Predominantly Black Institutions (pbis)

Tamara Massay-Trotz

ABSTRACT:

This presentation aims to explore the concept of student belonging and academic success within the context of Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs) amid the challenges presented by the current political climate. At a time when political and social issues surrounding race, access to resources, and identity are at the forefront, the question of belonging for Black students, particularly in higher education, has become more critical. While PBIs have long served as spaces of empowerment, resilience, and cultural affirmation, the evolving political landscape offers new obstacles that can undermine students’ sense of belonging. This session will examine how PBIs can proactively cultivate environments where students not only feel accepted and supported but can also access crucial resources that significantly contribute to their college completion and success.
