Mandlenkosi Richard Mphatheni, Prof. Witness Maluleke
ABSTRACT:
Gender-based violence (GBV) is not only endemic in South Africa; hence is characterised as a global pandemic that is inflicted upon men, women, and children. However, the majority of GBV cases and statistics that are reported reveal that women and children are chiefly on the receiving end. The scourge of GBV does not only compromise the dignity and human rights of the victims but also poses threat to their lives and demonstrate the economic burden on the South African economy. Consequently, the researcher will employ a systematic review on the costs of preventing and responding to GBV in South Africa, zooming in on the legal reform initiates, such as Laws and Policies, Institutional reforms, community mobilizations and individual behaviour changes. The researcher will collect secondary data from various sources, and a content analysis approach will be adopted to analyse the collected information/data from the perused literature. This study will employ qualitative approach to support and dispel claims and arguments advanced by various scholars on the economic costs of preventing and responding to GBV cases. This paper will advance recommendations to assist the South African economy on what can be done to avoid further economic costs on responding to GBV and to lessen the existing costs in responding and preventing GBV.
