Case Conferences and Tumor Boards – Utilizing Training Moments in Radiology

Ilona Petsch, Boris Buerke

ABSTRACT:

Case conferences (CC) and tumor boards (TB) are essential to clinical radiology practice, serving as established clinical forums for interdisciplinary collaboration between radiologists and non-radiologist clinicians. These settings reflect multiple clinical perspectives in patient care and management, offering a valuable environment for medical education. For medical students in radiology, regular participation in CC and TB provides an opportunity to deepen their medical knowledge and develop an understanding of multiple clinical viewpoints within routine medical practice. To maximize the educational benefits of these forums, we propose applying a modified didactic approach inspired by adult education principles. This approach encourages all participants – radiologist and non-radiologist clinicians, and medical students alike – to identify and utilize potential teaching and learning moments inherent in CC and TB discussions. Such a pragmatic approach fosters open-mindedness in examining radiological imaging and clinical cases, while promoting sensitivity to informal training opportunities. CC and TB are not only forums for clinical case discussions and decision-making on case management, but also serve as dynamic educational settings, stimulating the exploration of patient cases from multiple perspectives. Our key conclusions include: CC and TB provide unique opportunities to convey tacit imaging and further clinical knowledge, and interdisciplinary insights to medical students in radiology; these settings, framed by multiple specialist expertise, allow students to engage with patient cases through varied clinical perspectives; and medical educators and students should embrace CC and TB as essential components of radiology training, leveraging their potential to enhance clinical decision-making skills and foster interdisciplinary, patient-centered care.
