ABSTRACT:

ChatCPT, one of the natural language processing models that aim to enable computers to interact with humans, has recently become increasingly popular in learning environments. Understanding how students experience and perceive this technology is important for the future of educational practices. This study examines how teacher candidates use ChatGPT in their learning processes. 23 prospective teachers participated in the study. During a 5-week course consisting of 3 hours of lecture per week, students were given an application/task to complete each week. This process, students were advised to use ChatGPT in order to receive personalized and interactive support and instant feedback and guidance while completing the task in question. At the end of the 5-week implementation period, data were collected through semi-structured interview questions within the scope of a qualitative research design. Participants’ perceptions of metaphors towards ChatGPT, their views on the advantages, disadvantages and limitations of the tool were obtained. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. In addition, the chat contents of the students with ChatGPT were also evaluated among the data sources. The findings revealed that the teacher candidates perceive ChatGPT as a supportive and powerful tool that provides fast and easy access to information and guides teaching and learning processes. However, the study also highlighted that unconscious or uncontrolled use of this technology may lead to potential risks and ethical issues.
