ABSTRACT:
In the digital age, the prevalence of sext dissemination has become a major problem for youth and exposes them to potential negative consequences. The aim of this study (funded by HRZZ, grant number 3553) was to investigate the prevalence and motives for the sext dissemination among adolescents and the relationship between sexts dissemination victimization and perpetration. A sample of 4215 adolescents (42.52% boys, 57.49% girls) aged 14 to 20 years (M = 16.41; SD = 1.07) from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia participated in online surveys to assess their experiences sext dissemination. The results showed that 19.41% of adolescents were involved in the dissemination of their own and/or others’ sexts, often for fun or entertainment, mostly through a friend or intimate partner. Furthermore, victimization through the dissemination of sexts was significantly associated with the sext dissemination perpetration and vice versa, highlighting the link between these experiences. Furthermore, male gender was significantly associated with the likelihood of being a victim or perpetrator of sext dissemination, while younger age was only significantly associated with victimization through sext dissemination. These findings emphasize the importance of including prevention and intervention measures in school policies regarding the prevalence of sext dissemination among youth.
