AI in Education (Focusing on The Education of Students with Special Educational Needs / Disabilities)

Prof. Dr. Cecilia Sik-Lanyi, Dr. Patrícia Szabó

ABSTRACT:

Artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly grows and changes the established educational paradigms in a way that makes all the existing teaching methods become irrelevant. While some AI tools are becoming more popular in the field of education, there is no theoretical basis for the use of the technologies along with any ethical and data protection issues. Moreover, there is no existing training program that could provide some assistance in working with the students with disabilities. This presentation presents a 15-credit training course provided by University of Pannonia in Hungary.
In addition to being a technological innovation, this course provides the opportunity to integrate the use of AI technologies into the process of learning and teaching. The main goal of this course is to help teachers transition from mere transmitters of knowledge to becoming creators of learning paths and mentors. It pays special attention to the education of students with special educational needs and disabilities, helping them to live independently in the era of artificial intelligence through methodological reflections.
The course offers some practical skills, such as how to make effective prompts, generate content and conduct an assessment of students’ performance in the use of AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Canva. In order to successfully complete the course, participants need to create pedagogical materials using at least two AI platforms mentioned above.
At the same time, the course deals with the issue of risk management, preparing teachers for the handling of ethical problems, issues of data protection, dealing with hallucinations, and possible psychological effects of the use of misinformation in the education of vulnerable students. Overall, this course is meant to give teachers the required digital confidence and professional independence to be able to lead the digital transformation process.
