Economic and Social Stability of Slovakia in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic

ABSTRACT:

The COVID-19 pandemic represented one of the most significant crises of recent decades, affecting the economic, financial, and social development of the Slovak Republic. Its consequences were reflected in the functioning of households, the business environment, the labour market, public finances, and the financial sector. To mitigate these adverse effects, a number of support measures were adopted at both the national and European levels, aimed at protecting citizens, employment, and business entities. The aim of this paper is to analyse the economic and social stability of Slovakia in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a particular focus on its impact on households and the business environment, as well as on the responses of the government, the banking sector, and the insurance sector. Although economic and social stability is also influenced by a range of other domestic and international factors, including inflationary pressures, geopolitical developments, and broader macroeconomic conditions, this paper focuses specifically on the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, while these factors are not the primary subject of the analysis. The paper is based on an analysis of selected economic, financial, and social indicators using statistical data from the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic, the National Bank of Slovakia, Eurostat, and other relevant sources. It provides a comprehensive overview of the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in Slovakia, identifies the key factors affecting the country’s economic and social stability, and establishes a basis for further research and the evaluation of economic and social policies in the Slovak Republic.
