Comparison of the Physiological Level of Personality Education Thinking in Homeric Hymns and the Book of Songs

Dr. Chaoyang Lin

ABSTRACT:

Homeric Hymns and the Book of Songs are the earliest poetry in Greece and China, respectively, and offer preliminary answers to the question of personality education. Comparing their thinking on personality education can enhance intercultural understanding. A complete personality encompasses three levels: physiological, psychological, and social. Physiological aspects are the foundation of personality, therefore, this study first explores the personality education thinking of Homeric Hymns and the Book of Songs from a physiological perspective. This study employs literature review, historical research, and interpretive methods. This study foond that both Homeric Hymns and the Book of Songs share similar concepts of personality education at the physiological level: emphasizing pursuit of physical health and fitness, freedom from hunger, and moderation in sexual activity. Though they all emphasize pursuit of physical health and fitness, however, Homeric Hymns tend to be more dynamic and outward-facing, while the Book of Songs is more static and introspective. Homeric Hymns suggest concealing one’s physical form when outwardly disheveled or in danger, a point less emphasized in the Book of Songs. Their methods of personality education include physical exercise, hygiene, maintaining emotional stability, a balanced diet, sex education, sufficient quality sleep, eugenics and prenatal education, and reverence for the divine. Homeric Hymns also mention the proper use of medicinal substances.
