ABSTRACT:
Considering the shortage of teachers around the world, and as part of the work in the Teacher Academy Teacher Education for a Future in Flux (TEFF), we gathered responses from 75 first year education students to explore their perceptions of the teaching profession, including its attractiveness, expectations, challenges, motivations, and future career orientations. The sample was predominantly female (85.3%). Students rated the intrinsic value of teaching very highly, especially its meaningfulness (M = 4.47) and social impact (M = 4.39). However, they evaluated extrinsic conditions—such as recognition, autonomy, salary, and work–life balance—more moderately, revealing a clear tension between vocational motivation and structural limitations. Expectations about enriching aspects of teaching were strongly positive, with high scores for generativity, relationships, growth, and creativity. At the same time, students anticipated significant challenges, particularly workload, stakeholder pressure, and student behaviour. Relational dynamics emerged as both the main source of motivation and a major source of stress. Motivation for teacher training was strongly linked to practical experience (81.33%), meaningful content, skills development, and mentoring. Suggestions for improving teacher recognition focused on better salaries, greater social awareness, stronger family–school collaboration, and enhanced professional development. Overall, the report highlights a cohort of future educators who are highly motivated and aware of the profession’s demands, yet concerned about structural conditions that may affect long term satisfaction and retention.
