The Woodland Heritage of County Tyrone: Reconstructing Historical Landscapes through Toponymy

ABSTRACT:

Ireland’s landscape is characterised by an ancient and distinctive system of land division comprising four provinces, thirty-two counties, and approximately 60,000 townlands, the smallest and most enduring territorial units. Townland names originate largely from Irish and although many have been Anglicised over time, they retain rich cultural and environmental information. reflecting both natural features and human activity, offering valuable insights into historical landscapes.
This study examined all 1,894 townlands of County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, translating and interpreting their names using historical, linguistic, and cultural sources to reveal their descriptive meanings. They were then assigned to one of four thematic categories: (1) people and culture, (2) biotic features, (3) non-biotic features, and (4) woodland references. Woodland-related names accounted for a county-wide average of 20% with a range of between 11% of townlands in the Strabane division and 26% in the Dungannon division. This distribution highlights the historical ecological and cultural importance of woodland across the region.
Spatial analysis comparing woodland-referenced townlands with mid-19th-century Ordnance Survey maps revealed a correspondence between toponymic evidence and documented woodland cover. These findings demonstrate that place names can function as a reliable historical proxy for reconstructing past land use and vegetation. The persistence of woodland-related names, even where trees no longer exist, suggests a lasting cultural memory of once-significant wooded landscapes. Further research is being carried out on the ecological footprint that may be left behind in the form of ancient woodland indicator species remaining as vestiges in the ancient hedges found in woodland named townlands
