ABSTRACT:

Higher education environment is facing continuous change due to the release of new technological developments. This looming shift has implications for the student engagement and how we ensure students in higher education draw the best possible outcomes from GenAI. The aim is to determine the impact of GenAI use on student behavioural intentions, student wellbeing and student engagement in higher education. Human discernment and judgement include using experts in training and applying GenAI interactions. Highlighting the importance of obtaining knowledge and skills and the application thereof in learning and teaching in higher education. The aims are to propose a conceptual model to determine the effects of GenAI in higher education by building on the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology SDT theory and learning engagement theories. Stage 1 determine interrelationships between two antecedents, namely student GenAI use and psychological needs and their role in shaping student behavioural intentions and wellbeing. Stage 2 determine the interrelationships between two antecedents, namely student technology use and psychological needs and their role in affecting student engagement.
