Enhancing EFL Speaking Proficiency through Self-Filming and Imitation: Insights from Saudi Classrooms

The rapid shift toward digital and performative learning has reshaped how English is taught and experienced in non-native contexts. This study introduces an innovative blend of self-filming and imitation as complementary strategies for developing Saudi EFL learners’ speaking competence. Conducted with 76 secondary-level students in Saudi Arabia, the research adopted an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, combining IELTS-based pre- and post-testing with video analysis and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative findings revealed that the experimental group significantly outperformed the control group in post-intervention speaking scores, confirming the measurable benefits of these techniques. The qualitative phase provided richer insight: students described how imitating movie dialogues helped them internalize authentic pronunciation, rhythm, and pragmatic use of language, while self-recording promoted critical self-observation, confidence, and learner autonomy. Together, these activities transformed speaking practice from a passive exercise into an active, reflective, and creative process. Beyond measurable gains in fluency and accuracy, learners reported increased enjoyment and reduced anxiety—an important outcome in oral-communication pedagogy. The study argues that self-filming and imitation can serve as accessible, low-cost digital tools that personalize learning and link formal instruction to the informal “digital wilds” where students already engage with English media. The results hold broad implications for EFL educators, curriculum designers, and policymakers seeking to embed authentic, technology-enhanced speaking practices within contemporary language education frameworks.
