Between Tourism and Everyday Life: Quality of Life of Young People in the Island Community of Hvar (Croatia)
Gorana Bandalović, Klara Šimunović
ABSTRACT:
This study examines the quality of life of young people living on the island of Hvar. The research was conducted in 2022 using semi-structured interviews with 30 young participants. Qualitative analysis showed that most respondents had completed secondary education, while those with higher education faced significant difficulties in finding employment within their professional fields due to limited opportunities outside the tourism sector. Consequently, the majority were employed in tourism, primarily on a seasonal basis, and generally expressed satisfaction with their work despite its instability. Leisure time patterns varied considerably across seasons. During the winter months, participants reported having excess free time, whereas in the summer they experienced a lack of leisure time due to intensive work demands. Many respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the availability of leisure activities, emphasizing the limited opportunities for young people outside the tourist season. Tourism was perceived ambivalently. While it was recognized as the main source of income on the island, participants also highlighted negative effects such as rising living costs and the impact of party tourism on everyday life. Although respondents appreciated the island’s natural environment and winter tranquility, they also reported feelings of social isolation and limited opportunities for social interaction. Attitudes toward staying on the island were divided. Strong emotional ties to home, family, and work encouraged many to remain, while restricted access to healthcare, shopping facilities, entertainment, and employment opportunities beyond the tourism sector were the main reasons for considering leaving the island.
