San Francisco’s Transgender District: Visualizing Resistance, Resilience, and Community in Urban Queer Studies
Megan Rohrer
ABSTRACT:
San Francisco’s Transgender District is the world’s first legally recognized transgender district. The Transgender District is both a geographic and symbolic site of resistance, joy, and community formation—especially in the face of systemic marginalization. This presentation will share stories and multimedia and about the curation of over 200 photographs chronicling more than two centuries of trans art, life and community in the district. Subsequent communal gatherings helped reclaim erased histories, foster intergenerational dialogue, and challenge dominant narratives. In addition to learning more about San Francisco’s trans history, this presentation will also and create a roadmap for others to collect and share urban queer histories.
