Voice, Performance, and Presence: A Study of Musical Embodiment in Gaoqiang Tea-Lamp Opera through the Lens of an Omnimedia Presenter

ABSTRACT:

The author has Omnimedia Presenter and performing arts researcher experience, placing the sonic-bodily transmission of the Gaoqiang Tea-Lamp Opera, a provincial-level Intangible Cultural Heritage in Guizhou, China, into its ethnographic field site, the self-produced program Cultural Heritage in the Mountain Village. This four-hundred-year-old opera is the voice and the performance, the tacit musical knowledge embodied in the breath of the master and his disciple shared with each other, and the mutual breath, rhythm, and resonance. The study examines the relationship between the fourteenth-generation inheritor Feng Xiurong and her Gen-Z successor Feng Xiaoyun and how traditional opera is growing more vibrant under performative and sonic practice. The paper uses a sound-map narrative and audiovisual ethnography approach to depict the materiality of voice and rhythm of corporal expression. It suggests that Gaoqiang Tea-Lamp Opera is a triple exercise of music, acting, and emotion and an archive of music where the timbre, rhythm, and gesture maintain cultural memory. Being both the spectator and an interpreter, the presenter creates another form of contact between the performer, the audience, and the listener. This paper is based on the concept of performance ontology, which presents the application of digital media to act as a triple archive of the so-called sound-performance-body to give philosophical knowledge about the living preservation of the intangible musical heritage and methodology about the documentation of participatory approaches to contemporary media culture.
