A Study of the effect of Multidisciplinary Approach on the Social Competencies of Secondary School Students
Haripriya Kamath, Prof. Dr. Geeta Shetty
ABSTRACT:
Integrating a multidisciplinary approach to foster a comprehensive understanding of complex issues is essential in the rapidly evolving world and is significant for implementation in secondary schools. The paper aims to find the effect of multidisciplinary approach on the social competencies of Secondary School Students in Mumbai. This study was conducted at a Secondary School offering the State Board syllabus in Mumbai. The sample consisted of 57 Grade 9 students. The researcher developed a self-rating, 4-point Likert scale to measure opinion towards multidisciplinary approach and Social Competency scale. The researcher focused on understanding local and global problems, the ability to interact and teamwork to measure social competencies among secondary school students. A paired samples t-test was administered to compare the pre-test mean score = 117 (SD=12.83) and post-test mean scores =109.4(SD= 11.81) of social competencies, with t(56) = 3.81, p value<0.001. While the students showed a significantly high opinion towards the multi-disciplinary approach, the development of social competencies did not show the same result. A Pearson correlation coefficient r of 0.024 indicates a very weak positive linear relationship between opinion towards multidisciplinary approach and social competencies among secondary students. The result shows that inspite of a positive opinion of the secondary school students regarding multidisciplinary approach, the development of social competencies among them is not related to the approach.
