Barking Up The Wrong Tree? A Case Study On Pragmatic Competence In ESP Materials

Natalia Szkop

ABSTRACT:

Pragmatic competence plays a crucial role in English for Specific Purposes (ESP), equipping learners with the skills needed to handle authentic professional communication. This study explores how effectively Business Partner B2, a business-focused ESP coursebook published by Pearson, incorporates opportunities for developing pragmatic abilities. Using a mixed-methods research design, the analysis considers the presence, frequency, and distribution of activities aimed at pragmatic language use, with particular attention to three key illocutionary acts: requests, apologies, and suggestions. The results reveal uneven and limited coverage of pragmatics-related tasks, highlighting the need for more systematic and intentional inclusion of such elements in ESP instructional materials.
