ABSTRACT:
In Cameroon, sexual and gender minorities face many problems and challenges, including discrimination against women and girls who face gender inequality, which limits their access to education, health care, and employment. Women and girls also face physical, sexual, and psychological violence, which constitutes a major obstacle and hindrance to their development; cultural stereotypes and religion also play a crucial role in their devaluation.
Early marriage is common practice in Cameroon, with negative consequences for young girls, including dropping out of school and health risks. Forced marriage is also a reality for many women and girls in Cameroon, constituting a violation of their human rights. However, education is considered one of the key methods for promoting gender equality and understanding among religious leaders. Awareness-raising and strong community mobilization are also used to combat gender stereotypes and prejudices in religion. Civil society organizations and community-based organizations play an important role in promoting gender equality; in addition, tolerance and mutual respect through the media also serve as messages that promote equality.
The findings and data we have collected are based on a study of CBOs and CSOs in July 2024 and October 2025. The subject in question is central to the concept of gender and religion in all regions of Cameroon. According to their procedure, many of the young girls and women agreed to discuss the issue of gender and religion, representing a conditional acceptance rate of 88.26%. As a result, 91.6% The sample data highlights the need to examine the mechanisms of cultural stereotypes, as well as current sociocultural issues, such as the struggle to ensure the well-being and self-esteem of girls and women, with 87% seeking moral and psychological support from organizations, without suffering discrimination or stigmatization.
The concept of gender in Cameroon is evolving and still faces many significant challenges, namely the ongoing debate on gender equality, the influence of religions, and the various movements of organizations that are pursuing efforts to promote gender equality and women’s rights.
