A Virtual-based Learning Device to Foster Understanding of Physics Concepts in Stem Education

Yamani Dalila

ABSTRACT:

STEM education is based on the combination of the four disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The learning objectives are achieved by addressing real-life problems, which may focus on one of the four subjects. This seeks to fulfil the requirements of contemporary society for competitive and skilled individuals in these domains. In STEM education, students engage in scientific inquiry-based learning and engineering design. This requires the application of mathematics, physics, technology, modeling, design, computation, and other expertise to provide a solution to the identified problem. This enables students to grasp the theoretical concepts applied, including those from physics and mathematics, thereby enhancing their conceptual understanding in these subjects. We present in this communication a virtual device that we designed to improve the understanding of physics concepts by students in high school. The device is based on the Tinkercad platform and suggests STEM learning situations. It is intended for the students in the third year at high school in Algeria. The device was evaluated by two experts in physics and the results were close, demonstrating its effectiveness. A description of the device will be given by highlighting the technological components and the instructional approach, as well as the device’ validation grid and the results obtained.
