AI In English Language Writing Instruction: Challenges and Opportunities

Tal Lewis

ABSTRACT:

With the rise of new artificial intelligence (AI) writing tools capable of rapidly and effortlessly generating human-sounding text, English writing instruction faces unique challenges in motivating and engaging students. Teaching practices like excessive error correction and stand-alone writing prompts often fail to inspire students and should instead be replaced by meaningful real-world tasks and writing centered around personal experiences and interests, engaging students and preparing them for authentic communication beyond the classroom. This article presents practical recommendations for developing writing skills at all instructional levels, specifically adapted to today’s learning environment. It outlines a structured, four-semester writing curriculum designed and implemented at the Jerusalem College of Technology that aims to build students’ practical writing skills step by step. Further, this article explores the potential of AI tools to improve instruction when integrated with traditional teaching methods. Teachers can harness AI to provide instant, personalized writing feedback and assessment, and save time preparing lessons and materials. In this way, AI complements and enhances teacher-driven instruction instead of replacing it. In the age of AI, a new approach to teaching English writing is needed that addresses students’ changing needs and takes advantage of the latest tools available to teachers. Adapting proven methodologies to today’s evolving learning environment is essential to keep English writing instruction relevant and effective for years to come.
