Community Health Needs Assessments within a Five-Kilometer Radius of the Lebanese Red Cross Primary Health Care Centers

Dr. Rosabelle Chedid

ABSTRACT:

A Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) is a systematic process used to identify key health needs, service gaps, and priorities of a specific population within the area of study to draft a clear plan of action accordingly. The Lebanese Red Cross (LRC) started conducting CHNA within a five-kilometer radius of each Branch Primary Health Care Center (PHCC) to understand the health challenges faced by the community since the beginning of the Lebanese economic, health and social crises. A mixed-methods approach based on quantitative and qualitative data was adopted. Quantitative data were collected through the household, while qualitative data were collected using semi-structured interviews with key informants and non-governmental organization (NGO) representatives, all randomly selected. A structured survey was also conducted with all PHCC directors in the study area. Sampling was carried out using proportionate random sampling techniques, based on a sample size calculation considering a 95% confidence level and a 2.5% margin of error. Data collection was conducted by trained and coached volunteers using Survey123 ArcGIS. The data was cleaned and coded, and descriptive statistical analysis was performed. Findings identified a high prevalence of chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, healthcare expenses due to the lack of health coverage, frequent medication shortages and mental health concerns. PHCCs also faced structural issues, including staff shortages, inadequate accessibility for individuals with disabilities and limited services. The LRC is using these findings as an evidence base to shape its action plan to support the most vulnerable communities. Key priorities included expanding PHCC, improving medication availability and launching outreach campaigns.
