ABSTRACT:

Javier Fajardo Chaves (1950-2011) was a Colombian composer and music pedagogue, often recognized as the reformer of the music education system at the Music Department of the University of Nariño in Pasto, Colombia, at the end of the 20th century. Fajardo Chaves also composed music inspired by the popular music of southwestern Andean Colombia. By analyzing documentary evidence and information gathered through primary oral sources and the composer’s musical record, this paper studies his piano repertoire as a musical pedagogical proposal at the university level. Furthermore, this paper breaks down a complex cultural history that combines issues such as the institutionalization of music education in Pasto and the reconfiguration of musical art as global music through a process that negotiated the notions of pan-Andean music as Latin American music. This analysis is divided into three parts: First, the composer and some biographical data of interest are introduced. Then we will examine his piano repertoire and the technical and interpretative resources that Fajardo Chaves uses in his works. Finally, some of his works will be interpreted and his contribution to piano pedagogy will be pointed out. In this way, the study on Fajardo Chaves suggests that his work for piano, inserted in the field of music education within the University of Nariño (Colombia), allows the exploration of technical aspects of the academy, and it also suggests that these are nourished by Latin American popular music.
