ABSTRACT:
This study, titled “The Impact of Mass Media Tools on Listening and Speaking Skills of Preparatory School Students at Başkent University”, was conducted by Başak Şahin under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Senem Üstün Kaya. It investigates how mass media tools (especially the internet, cinema, television and news media) affect the speaking and listening skills of Başkent University preparatory school students. The main purpose of the study is to show how these media tools improve students’ communication skills, affect their motivation and how they participate in class.”Checklist for Measuring Communicative Abilities”, developed by Muhsin Yanar (2013) and used with permission, collected data from 100 students to determine the relationship between students’ media usage habits and speaking and listening skills. In addition, structured interviews with 5 teachers provided qualitative data on students’ classroom participation, motivation levels and advantages and disadvantages of media integration in lessons. During the study, it was concluded that media tools can help EFL students improve their listening skills. However, it has been understood that these tools require interactive learning environments, structured tasks and teacher support to develop speaking skills. Students need to move from passive receivership to active production. Media use makes individual learning flexible and meaningful and shapes the learning process according to students’ interests. However, in order for this potential to be transformed into educational benefits, teacher support, pedagogical approaches and assessment-evaluation tools are required. This study has shown that mass media, when supported by appropriate strategies, is a powerful tool in developing EFL students’ listening and speaking skills. However, media use alone is not enough; it should be used together with interaction, active production and teacher guidance. As a result, educators need to find innovative methods to integrate media use into both in-class and out-of-class learning environments.
