A Study on Lord Krishna’s sermon on peace and war in the Bhagwad Geeta
Prof. Dr. Savitri Singh
ABSTRACT:
Shrimadbhagvad Gita is not just Sanskrit epic but the wholesome truth of life which gives the solution of each and every challenges faced by the man kind regardless of time. Bhagvad Gita cannot be only considered as a Mythological and Spiritual book because it is multifaceted having the deepest knowledge of global sensibility that is secular in nature as well as war ethics. The text is in the form of a conversation between the warrior Arjuna, who on the eve of an apocalyptic battle, hesitates to kill his friends and family on the other side, and the incarnate Lord Krishna, who acts as Arjuna’s charioteer and persuades him to do it. Lord Krishna preached Arjuna that he should partake in war without the feeling of ‘Passion and hatred’ and he should follow the path of ethical war with the light of Dharma and Duty to attain inner peace and self-control. Sometimes people think that Bhagvad Gita glorifies war which is very wrong interpretation of that. Bhagvad Gita teaches that war becomes necessary if the justice and righteousness is compromised by selfishness of high society people. In the light of Gita we say that War is last option. Before starting of war, Lord Krishna on the behalf of Pandavas tried to compromise by offering to give only five villages instead of whole kingdom. But Duryodhana’s denial and haughty nature called war against family members.
