Participatory Learning of Students on Their Involvement in Civil Society Development

Prof. Dr. Joanna Kurowska-Pysz

ABSTRACT:

Contemporary and future-oriented academic education should address current socio-economic and environmental challenges, not only in terms of knowledge and skills acquired by students but also in terms of the development of their social competencies, related to, among others, understanding the importance of the individuals in society and the ability to make a creative contribution to the life of society through its members. Therefore, in addition to academic and vocational education, civic education is an important area of student education, which should consider, among others, a participatory and place-based approach. The work aims to present a curriculum and selected participatory educational tools that can be used to educate students’ civic awareness through their participation in classes carried out in the problem-based learning model with the involvement of local stakeholders. An international case study which is presented was implemented at universities in Poland, Germany and Lithuania, thanks to funding from the Erasmus Plus Programme. Thanks to the implementation of this project, the curriculum and tools mentioned above were designed, tested and validated. Based on the qualitative research conducted within the project, this work presents a model of participatory learning of civil society development in the local environment.
