A Case Study in How Covid Affected Grades for Different Student Demographics
Dr. Douglas R. Moodie, Dr. Alison Keefe
ABSTRACT:
Certain demographics of students may prefer certain modalities and certain demographics may achieve higher mean grades in some teaching modalities than others. This study used student-section data from all the undergraduate courses at Kennesaw State University (KSU) from 2015 to 2023. This data set with individual student course outcomes included full student demographics and course types, including previous university grade point average (GPA), sex, age, ethnicity, course department, modality, etc. The study showed that there was a large increase in mean course grades for all demographics during Covid, followed to a reversion to the preceding increasing trend. These results show that GPA and course grades may not be the best measure of success for learning when comparing results from different years.
