Implementing Educational Experiences That Interrelate Art Museum Education and Foreign Language Teaching
Ariel Mateos
ABSTRACT:
Teaching a foreign language by means of educational experiences in art museums enhances the development of intercultural skills through cultural and personal self-awareness, as well as a collaborative construction of cross-curricular meaning through embodied learning and visual critical thinking. The interrelationship between museum education and FLT provides opportunities for integrating mental and emotional processes, personal and social memory construction, cultural decentring and intercultural communication, critical thinking and tenderness towards others. Museum-based Foreign Language Teaching poses some stimulating challenges. Although this growing field seems to be highly promising, teachers of foreign languages need specific tools to explore and exploit its potential benefits. Starting from an analysis of the principles that underpin the correlation between FLT and museum education, the aim of this presentation is to discuss the practical resources that FL teachers require so that they may design and implement effective projects in art museums. This discussion will be based on data collected during a recent seminar delivered at Universität Heidelberg, which included instances of practice at Museum Ludwig.
