ABSTRACT:

This study targeted examining the level of digital citizenship among school students in Oman from the perspective of various stakeholders. Selected purposively from several related sectors, 28 participants were included in semi-structured interviews conducted in 2022/2023, adopting a qualitative approach. The sample included students, parents, school principals, social specialists, teachers as well as participants from the Ministry of Education, Public Prosecution, Royal Oman Police and the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology. Data was verbatim transcribed and analyzed inductively using QDA Miner program. The analysis of the data collected generated eight themes. They are participants’ general perception of students’ level of DC, equal access opportunities, respectful online behavior, awareness of online laws, buy and sell skills, critical evaluation skills, privacy and security skills, and physical and psychological impact. The results indicated dissatisfaction with the level of students in digital citizenship. According to participant feedback, students showed a notable inadequacy, particularly in the domain of protective skills. They also highlighted a pressing need for additional training in this domain. Moreover, they highly recommended establishing a specific curriculum to train students in the field of digital citizenship from early ages.
