Severe Mental Illness and Recovery as an Opportunity
Dr. Martina Černá, Markéta Dubnová, Milan Tomka, David Urban
ABSTRACT:
Recovery, as an integral part of mental health treatment, aims to help individuals with serious mental illnesses restore their quality of life. This concept is rooted in the belief that individuals can lead meaningful lives despite persistent symptoms. The recovery model focuses on regaining control over one’s life rather than merely reducing symptoms or returning to premorbid functioning. This report presents findings from in-depth research interviews with 15 individuals who have successfully recovered from long-standing psychiatric disorders. It examines the impact of mental illness on a person’s social functioning and identifies key factors that facilitate the recovery process. The results highlight the importance of reconstructing social roles, achieving self-realization, accessing respectful professional care, and developing a sense of self as an agent of activity and responsibility in the recovery process. The research suggests that recovery can be a journey of discovery and personal growth. Experiences of mental illness may serve as opportunities for self-reflection, rebuilding relationships, acquiring new skills, and meeting personal needs. By integrating the recovery model, professional care gains a new dimension, enabling individuals with severe mental illnesses to regain control and find meaning in their lives. However, the success of the recovery model depends on health and social service systems adopting comprehensive care strategies and innovative approaches.
