Dr. Winojith Sanjeewa
ABSTRACT:
The preservation of cultural heritage and the fortification of community bonds within the BMEA (Black, Minority Ethnic, and African) diaspora are critical in maintaining identity and fostering unity. This presentation, titled “Sustaining Cultural Heritage and Strengthening the BMEA Diaspora Community: Exploring the Impact of Events and Overcoming Challenges,” delves into the multifaceted role of cultural events in achieving these goals. Cultural heritage encompasses the traditions, customs, and artifacts that define a community’s identity. For the BMEA diaspora, these elements are vital in preserving a sense of belonging and continuity amidst the challenges of migration and integration into new societies. This presentation examines how cultural events, such as festivals, exhibitions, and community gatherings, serve as pivotal platforms for the transmission and celebration of heritage. These events not only provide opportunities for cultural expression but also act as conduits for intergenerational knowledge transfer, ensuring that younger generations remain connected to their roots. However, sustaining cultural heritage within the diaspora is fraught with challenges. Issues such as funding constraints, logistical hurdles, and the risk of cultural dilution pose significant threats. This presentation explores these challenges in depth, offering insights into how communities can navigate and overcome them. It highlights successful case studies where innovative approaches and community-driven initiatives have effectively addressed these obstacles. Moreover, the presentation underscores the importance of collaboration between community organisations, local governments, and international bodies in supporting cultural initiatives. By fostering partnerships and leveraging resources, the BMEA diaspora can enhance the impact of cultural events and ensure their sustainability. In conclusion, this presentation aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the impact of cultural events on sustaining heritage and strengthening community bonds within the BMEA diaspora. It offers practical recommendations for overcoming challenges and underscores the collective effort required to preserve cultural identity in an ever-evolving global landscape.
