Advancing Gender Equality: The Influence of Women’s Rights Movements in the Metropolitan Manila, Philippines
Dr. Joel Melecio Cabael
ABSTRACT:
This study examines the significant role of women’s rights activism and movements in shaping political change and advancing gender equality in the Metropolitan Manila of the Philippines. It investigates how women’s activism has driven policy reforms, legislative changes, and broader female empowerment within the context of a complex socio-political landscape. The Metropolitan Manila, as the nation’s economic and political center, provides a unique setting where women’s rights movements have emerged as key agents of social transformation. Employing a multidisciplinary approach, this research evaluates the evolution of women’s activism and its impact on political decision-making. The methodology integrates qualitative interviews, archival research, and policy document reviews. Findings reveal that women’s rights movements in the Metropolitan Manila have played a pivotal role in fostering gender-sensitive legislation and policies. Activist groups have engaged in lobbying efforts and grassroots campaigns to challenge traditional gender norms and create a more inclusive political environment. Furthermore, these initiatives have bolstered female political participation, enhancing democratic processes in the Metropolitan Manila. This study offers insights into how grassroots movements can influence policy agendas and further women’s rights within dynamic sociopolitical contexts, contributing to a deeper understanding of the interplay between women’s activism, political progress, and gender equality in the Metropolitan Manila. The implications extend beyond the Philippines, offering relevant perspectives for other countries facing similar challenges (McGregor, 2017; Lopez, 2020; Tatum, 2022).
