ABSTRACT:

This study investigates the relationship between Just World Beliefs (JWB) and Empathy towards victims, focusing on the cognitive and emotional components of empathy. JWB is a cognitive bias that influences how individuals perceive and respond to misfortune, potentially leading to reduced empathy and contributing to Victim Blame. The study aims to demonstrate a negative correlation between JWB and empathy, by employing a quantitative study. By understanding this correlational relationship, interventions and education to enhance empathy and reduce victim-blaming attitudes can be employed effectively. As the phenomenon of Victim blaming proves to be ingrained in the patriarchal beliefs of Indian society, this study aims to explore potential interventions to prevent it. Victim blaming in India is a detrimental issue. By examining the psychological and sociocultural factors, the study aims to prove how a multifaceted approach is necessary to tackle Victim blame effectively. By establishing this relationship between JWB and Empathy, India can move towards a society that protects, rather than blames, victims of crime.
