The Effect of Supportive Cognitive-Behavior Group Therapy on Mental Health and Irrational Believes of Mothers of Intellectually Disabled Children

ABSTRACT:

This study was aimed at evaluating the effect of supportive cognitive-behavioral therapy on the mental health and irrational beliefs of mothers of children with intellectual disabilities. The sample of this research consisted of 50 mothers of children with intellectual disabilities. Subjects were placed randomly in control and experimental groups. Measurements were mental health inventory and Jones irrational believes questionnaire. The experimental group participated in 10 sessions of group therapy. The result of the covariance analysis showed that supportive cognitive-behavioral group therapy improved the mental health scores of the experimental group in the post-test stage. Also, scores of irrational beliefs were significantly different. (p<0.05). A supportive cognitive-behavioral intervention could be effective in improving the mental health of mothers of children with intellectual disabilities. Also, supportive cognitive-behavioral interventions could be effective in improving the irrational beliefs of mothers of children with intellectual disabilities.
