Serious Game Development for Climate Education: The ECF4CLIM Learning Game
Nóra Kövesd, Orsolya Kotnyek
ABSTRACT:
The ECF4CLIM project, funded by the EU Horizon 2020 program, promotes sustainable practices and climate action through education. It employs a participatory, multidisciplinary approach to create and validate a European Competence Framework (ECF) that supports transformative change. This framework equips educators to address climate change and sustainable development. One of the key elements of ECF4CLIM is a learning game designed to engage educational communities in climate actions. Using game-based learning, it raises awareness about climate change, fosters responsible citizenship, and imparts understanding of sustainability principles to students and teachers. The game, co-developed with input from educators and students, features tailored environments for different age groups (6-9, 10-15, and 16-25 years), incorporating quizzes, decision trees, drag-and-drop activities, true or false and memory games and storytelling elements. Hosted on a digital platform, it encourages repeated interaction and integrates theoretical knowledge through interactive play. The game was tested across multiple schools, receiving positive feedback for its engaging content, especially from older participants (16-25 years). While most users found the game accessible and effective, some younger children (6-9 years) encountered challenges. Future updates will simplify content for younger users and consider translations for broader accessibility. Overall, the ECF4CLIM game is an engaging tool that enhances understanding of sustainability and climate action.
