Digital Technologies in Circular Economy: Catalysing Sustainable Transformation

ABSTRACT:

The transition from traditional linear economic models to circular economy (CE) models represents a fundamental shift in how resources are managed, products are designed, and waste is perceived. At the core of this transformation are technology and innovation, which serve as critical enablers for developing and implementing CE principles. By integrating cutting-edge technologies into business processes, supply chains, and product design, companies can achieve greater resource efficiency, reduce waste, and create closed-loop systems that regenerate materials and energy. At the same time, technology is central to the CE as it enables the implementation of circular strategies such as product life extension, material recycling, and the regeneration of natural systems being a catalyst for sustainable transformation. The integration of digital technologies, smart systems, and advanced manufacturing techniques allows businesses to optimise resource use, monitor product lifecycles, and reduce environmental impacts. This paper explores the role of technology as an innovation in supporting CE models and discusses the main technological trends driving the transition towards circularity catalysing sustainable development.
