What Have We Changed? English Learning Motivation in the Post-Pandemic Era
Dr. Ruth Ming Har Wong
ABSTRACT:
Motivation to learn English has been an important construct in learning and received extensive attention on how it affects learning attitude and behaviour. COVID has given birth to new teaching pedagogies of EFL education. How has the students’ learning motivation changed in light of this significant change in the EFL education paradigm? This presentation will investigate and outline the EFL learning motivation in the post-pandemic era – 1) what the learning motivation was before COVID, 2) how their learning motivation changed immediately after COVID, and 3) whether the learning motivation has been sustained or modified in the past few years. The results of this study provide insights into EFL education that are significant to education. With the results of this study, it is hoped that a fuller picture of how different aspects and factors can be of significance to a learner’s EFL learning motivation to learn in the near future. For educators, the results can shed light on the pathways to effective EFL teaching and learning by understanding what affects a learner’s motivation to learn English. For researchers, this paper would like to offer a future direction to how English learning motivation can be a fluid concept and factor in understanding learning behaviour and teaching direction.
