The Family in the Age of AI-Chat Bots: Implications for Policy

ABSTRACT:
Artificial intelligence (AI) systems are rapidly making a significant impact in our world. Some experts are concerned about the speed of AI development, as these systems have the potential to surpass human intelligence. People are even forming deep connections with AI chatbots, to the point of marrying them, which raises questions about the impact on family dynamics and friendships. While AI technologies offer documented benefits, they also come with serious risks that can affect individuals, groups, organizations, communities, society, and the environment. Little is known about the potential risks of intimate relationships between humans and AI chatbots on family life and stability. Given the global interest in these relationships, this research is timely. This study uses sociological and family systems theories to explore the impact of AI chatbot relationships on families. A systematic qualitative review revealed that intimacy between humans and AI chatbots does impact family life and stability. The results of this study carry implications for policy development and implementation.
