Enhancing Foreign Language Learning Through Synergistic Integration of Teacher Expertise and GenAI
Cong Li and Chiayi Lin
ABSTRACT:
In the design of foreign language learning lessons, the indispensable role of teachers in overseeing the process, combined with the advancements in technology and artificial intelligence, significantly enhances the efficiency and effectiveness. Experienced language teachers can identify proficiency levels and select appropriate authentic materials accordingly. This allows for the creation of lessons that are better tailored and more meaningful to students’ needs. Meanwhile, the development of technology and AI provides powerful auxiliary tools, making lesson design more scientific and efficient. In this presentation, we will discuss the effective and efficient integration the expertise of teachers and GenAI to design online foreign language lessons – Global Language Online Support System (GLOSS). With a self-directed learning approach, GLOSS hosts a wide range of online learning lessons developed with authentic materials and corresponding comprehensive learning activities. Each GLOSS lesson addresses specific language learners’ needs and learning capabilities. The combination of GenAI’s analytical capabilities and teachers’ pedagogical insights elevate the lesson design especially in two areas. First, matching authentic materials that meets the comprehension levels while being realistic and practical, ensuring that students benefit from real-world applications; and second, developing diverse content from various perspectives and making the self-guided learning process more dynamic and engaging. By exploring these collaborative efforts between GenAI and teachers, we will also review the concerns and strains, with the aim of ultimately fostering a more dynamic and meaningful learning experience for language learners through the online learning lessons.
