Policy Recommendations for Special Education Transition Services for Students with Intellectual Disabilities in Saudi Arabia

Reem Alhilfi

ABSTRACT:

The transition between leaving high school and entering the community as an adult can be difficult for students with intellectual disabilities (ID). Providing services while students with an ID are in-school is crucial to their post-secondary outcomes, employment prospects, and quality of life. Despite this importance, transition practices in Saudi Arabia are not built to adequately support individuals with an ID. The primary purpose of this brief is to (a) evaluate current special education and transition services and outcomes for students with an ID in Saudi Arabia, (b) provide an overview the laws and regulations in SA relating to special education and transition services, and (c) provide recommendations and suggestions for SA policy makers and educators relating to the improvement of transition services.
