Worldview and Behavior Influenced by Language as Seen in The Main Character of Movie Interstellar

ABSTRACT:

The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, an intriguing concept states that language has profound influence on an individual perception of reality. This concept finds manifestation in diverse areas of life, which includes Real life situations, written discourse, musical composition and Cinematic sphere. Henceforth, with a specific focus on Christopher Nolan’s opus “Interstellar”, this research is oriented to investigate the language and behavioral elements of the protagonist. This research is ultimately an exploration of the potential influence exerted by the language on his perception of the world and his behavior. The data were extracted from script of the movie and its associated audiovisual resources. The Results indicates that significant portion of the character’s language exhibits assertiveness. Moreover, with 22.26% of his utterances are taking the form of interrogative sentences. In addition, it was observed that majority of his utterances are relatively brief as 58.57% of his utterances are consists of sentences containing between 1 to 5 words. These language characteristics has a influence over not only his world view but also his personal and social aspect of behavior.
