ABSTRACT:

Effective innovation management is a key to build competitive advantage and enhance firm performance. Many scholars have argued that firm’ ability to establish effective relationships in network influences innovation as well as facilitated the mobilization of resources for growth. The extent to which firms are involved in networking and their network status how to translate into innovation performance is less clear. The study aims to fill this gap, thereby enhancing understanding of the relationship between network status (in-status and out-status) and innovation performance; and further, investigating whether there is the moderating effect of organizational specialization on both relationships. Based on the perspectives of social network, organizational ecology and organizational specialization, this study focuses on innovation networks of global TFT-LCD technology, and uses patent and citation analysis to measure network status, organization specialization and innovation performance. The research samples are 117 firms from Global TFT-LCD technology. Patent and citation data from USPTO are used for testing the related hypothesizes in this study. From the empirical results, there is a high interrelation relationship in the innovation network of global TFT-LCD technology. This study also proved that there is a positive connection between network status (in-status and out-status) and innovation performance. Organizational specialization is found to be a moderator and proved to have negative effects on the relationship between network status and innovation performance.
