Exploring Eastern European Bunkers: Balancing Artistic Interventions and Nuclear Discourse
Prof Dr. Kinga Anna Gajda
ABSTRACT:
The presentation aims to discuss anti-nuclear bunkers in Eastern Europe, emphasizing the role of art in bunkers that have become tourist destinations. The paper aims to presentations of various installations, including the one at Bunk’Art in Tirana, the shelter in Nowa Huta (Krakow), and the origami installations in Budapest. The paper explores the utilization of art in heritage bunkers located in Eastern Europe, building on the tourist exploitation of bunkers and emphasizing the role of art in this context. The incorporation of art into these bunkers reflects a broader trend wherein historical fascination transforms into a cultural norm. While tourist bunkers often strive to construct narratives of redemption from past threats, conflicts, and military use, installations, and other artistic creations located in bunkers focus on evoking an authentic space, radiophobia, and nuclear discourse. This departure from the conventional tourist bunker to artistic experience adds an element of strangeness to artistic intervention and work, highlighting the contrast between the two approaches to interpreting and presenting historical sites of nuclear bunkers.
