Ear Training Throughout Interdisciplinary Approach. Combining Visual and Plastic Education with Music Education
Francisco Javier Zarza-Alzugaray, Nora Ramos Vallecillo, Víctor Murillo Ligorred
ABSTRACT:
In the classroom of Teacher of Primary Education students at the University of Zaragoza, an educational innovation/action research project has been implemented in which a series of transdisciplinary activities have been proposed that integrate plastic/visual and musical competences. With a view to the acquisition of specific competences related to didactic-artistic-musical training, as established in the subjects’ syllabus. The project focused on integrating both knowledge through the concept of image: on the one hand, the “sound image” and, on the other, the visual/plastic image. One of the grounds for the involvement of both disciplines is an integrated work on the basis of their common points. This explores how the materialisation of sound and plastic creation can be brought together through interdisciplinary interpretation. This novel approach to teacher training not only stands out for the interdisciplinary/ transdisciplinary nature of both areas, but also for the innovation and new avenues of research it entails. The musical excerpts correspond to the work Pictures at an Exhibition by M. Mussorgsky. Briefly, throughout the project sessions, the university lecturers guided the future primary school teachers on how to “translate” or “interpret” what they heard into a pictorial/plastic/visual work. We can also see that there are significant mean differences (t-test) between the median point of the evaluation of the objectives (4 points) and the scores obtained, leading us to think that the programme has led to an improvement in the teaching-learning process of the students who have taken it. According to the students’ evaluation of the project (n=32; Boys= 10; Girls= 22) (7-point Likert scale) we see that with respect to Objective 1 (Improvement of listening skills and musical understanding) the students value it with a mean of 5.43 (SD= .87); with respect to Objective 2 (Improvement of didactic skills with a view to the possible implementation of Music Education in the Primary School Classroom) equal to 5.37 (SD= 1.03); with respect to Objective 3 (improvement of interdisciplinary resources thanks to the programme) the mean stands at 5.03 (SD= 1.09); with respect to Objective 4 (improvement of interdisciplinary resources thanks to the programme) the mean stands at 5.03 (SD= 1.09). 37 (SD= 1.03); regarding Objective 3 (increase of interdisciplinary resources thanks to the programme) the mean is 5.03 (SD= 1.09); regarding Objective 4 (improvement of the critical sense of musical listening) the mean is 5.06 points (SD= 1.04); Objective 5 (improvement of Visual and Plastic didactic skills and the associative and representative capacity of sound passages) the mean is 4.71 (SD= 1.3). From a qualitative point of view, we can see how there is a clear improvement in the process of musical-pictorial transfer with a view to the creation of quality artistic creations. In the following images (attached) and by way of example, we can appreciate the improvement from an initial evaluation to the final product after the course of the project.
