ABSTRACT:

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the HEARRT (Hear, Read, Relax, Think) Technique as a counseling strategy in dealing with a caregiver’s anticipatory grief. A multiple case study of four female adult primary caregivers with high anticipatory grief and low levels of spirituality was used.  Before and after the process of HEARRT, the Marwit Meuser-Caregiver Inventory (MM-CGI) and The Spiritual Intelligence Self-Report Inventory (SISRI-24) were administered. The caregivers’ responses were transcribed, coded, and categorized into themes. Results of the study revealed that all four female adult caregivers experienced an improvement in their level of anticipatory grief and spirituality, as well as a reduction in physical muscle tension.  Worry and Isolation were adjusted significantly among the three domains of anticipatory grief. Spirituality’s Transcendental Awareness and Conscious State Expansion domains improved considerably. Based on the findings of this study, HEAART is an effective counseling technique for caregivers who are experiencing a high level of anticipatory grief. It is suggested that counselors, psychologists, and palliative care health professionals in the Philippines use the HEARRT Technique as a spiritual counseling approach which may be adopted as a model in the field of counseling, psychology, and palliative care, which can be used in-person or via Tele counseling
