ABSTRACT:

The present study explores anger and its depiction in Western visual art. The authors highlight the paradox of anger: its unpleasantness and repulsiveness in experience and perception versus its thematization in visual art. They consider the historical transformations in its expression and the mechanisms that render its depiction artistically effective. They conclude that anger acts as a warning stimulus that shocks and captures our attention, serving as a motivator for expressing personal feelings. However, its “attractiveness” is fleeting.
