Digital Versus Traditional: Emirati Youth Engagement with Majlis Culture
Asma Obaid AlShaibah
ABSTRACT:
The confluence of heritage and progress in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) offers a unique vantage point to observe the interplay between conventional practices and digital modernity. At the heart of this intersection stands the Emirati Majlis, a traditional cornerstone of communal exchange and social unity. This research paper investigates the evolving role of the Majlis among Emirati youth, exploring the balance between its time-honored significance and the burgeoning realm of digital forums. Employing a mixed-method approach, the study surveys young Emirati adults within the 25 to 35 age range; the investigation is two-pronged: quantitative data is collected via an online survey to gauge the prevalence and preference of digital versus traditional Majlis formats; qualitative insights are drawn from focus group discussions to delve into the nuanced perceptions of cultural preservation and community dynamics. The findings are anticipated to illustrate a nuanced dialogue between the allure of digital innovation and a steadfast allegiance to tradition, offering insights into strategic youth engagement with Majlis culture in the digital age. The study contributes to the discourse on cultural sustainability amid technological progression, recommending strategies for intertwining traditional values with digital advancements. This research accentuates the dynamic function of the Majlis in cultivating a cohesive, culturally vibrant Emirati society propelled by the active participation and perspectives of its youth.
