In All-Female Organisations: Women Workplace Friendship, Ambitions and Obstacles

ABSTRACT:
This article draws upon the qualitative findings of 20 interviews undertaken with female teachers in order to explore the topic of workplace friendships between women in an all-female organizational setting. The interview data sheds light on these friendships examining how the workplace setting can influence the forms of friendship that women build. This article contributes to current knowledge on workplace friendship development and, specifically, the issues associated with women’s development of friendships within the all-female workplace context. The results of the study underlined workplace friendship complexity and showed how friendships in all women’s workplaces can be formed or disrupted by religious precepts, cultural rules regarding male – dominated culture and marital status.
